RPS Landscape Group Workshop - Ribblehead

A couple of months ago I signed up for a day out with Lizzie Shepherd on behalf of the RPS Landscape Group at Ribblehead and Kingsdale. I’ve had a base in the Yorkshire Dales for a few years now but I only get over to the western reaches a few times a year. This was an ideal opportunity to explore a couple of new photography locations. I’ve been to Ribblehead quite a few times but both the Cheese Press Stones and Thorns were new to me.

We started off at a lovely limestone pavement with distant views of the viaduct before driving round to Kingsdale and walking up to the Cheese Press Stone. By this point the weather was closing in so we retreated back to Ribblehead to the abandoned village of Thorns.

The bad weather didn’t really bother me until the very end of the day when it started to hurl down and the temperature plunged. However, by this stage we were starting to close down as the darkness was falling and we all had shots safely stored. As most of you know I prefer moody weather for my landscapes as low cloud and rain add to the atmosphere so I was pleased that I was able to work with my favourite conditions. I decided that black and white editing suited my photographs best so that the cloud and murk could have their rightful place in the images.

I also bumped into a flock of sheep being herded down the road. #theicingonthecake!
