Winter in Borrowdale

I was gutted at the end of the second period of lockdown when I discovered that my much anticipated holiday on the Northumberland coast was cancelled due to the area being trapped in Tier 3. However, I quickly realised that the Lake District was in Tier 2, (same as York), and so I could book a break there instead.

I got myself a room in a hotel in Borrowdale and set off in a state of anticipation as my trip there in May was also cancelled due to the dreaded lurgy and I had definitely missed visiting my favourite places. It was a rare treat for me to be looked after in a hotel, (Leathes Head Hotel), and I am certainly prepared to repeat the experience when I want to escape anywhere for a few days at short notice.

The weather was very promising on the drive across the Pennines as I could see snow on the mountain tops. An exploration of Tewet Tarn was required en route to enable me to admire Blencathra in full seasonal dress! ! As I was only in the lakes for a few days I spent my time out with my camera at numerous landmarks within a 10 mile radius. Daylight hours were too short for long trips and major investigations. However, I loved being able to spend time in the landscape admiring the views and trying to capture the atmosphere of Derwentwater and Buttermere in winter.

The weather wasn’t great as there was a lot of heavy cloud but fortunately there wasn’t much rain to dampen my enthusiasm and I was able to make the most of my time in wonderful Borrowdale and Buttermere. I am already looking forward to May when I can return and stay in my favourite cottage.
