RPS Landscape Your Way: high key photography

I have just completed a virtual workshop with the RPS run by Mark Banks. The theme was high key landscape photography and I decided that I would explore my local wood at Moorlands and see what I could capture.

Moorlands is a small Edwardian woodland garden which is part of the ancient Forest of Galtres. It is one of my favourite places in York as it changes significantly according to the season. In the spring and summer it is ablaze with colour due to a parade of mature rhododendrons, azaleas and maple trees. In the autumn the leaves change colour to become red and gold and they fall like a coloured rain onto the woodland floor.

However, it is very different in winter with mature trees and twisted shrubs co-existing with no colour at all other than shades of brown and black when the tree bark is wet. There are also signs of human activity with a hide, craft shed and numerous benches camouflaged within the woodland along with carvings and nature posts along the path.

My plan was to use high key photography to showcase the textures and shapes of this winter woodland emphasising its beauty all year round.
