Out of Lockdown - Fraisthorpe

I promised myself that the moment I was allowed out from lockdown I would drive to the sea at dawn and watch the sun coming up and celebrate my relative freedom. On the Thursday morning I was up at 3.00am and off to Fraisthorpe and it’s wonderful sandy beach with all it’s features. It didn’t disappoint as there were lovely clouds in the sky, a crescent moon and wonderful patterns in the sand. Oh how I had missed the sea and all it’s delights!

The following week I decided that I would visit Fraisthorpe again but at sunset. It was a very different experience as there were no clouds to provide reflections and the sun was directly behind me as I faced the sea. This meant that I had to contend with a massive shadow which was omnipresent in any photograph that featured the sea shore (see left). I had to think of a Plan B or it was a wasted trip.

Fortunately the sun was extremely low and it cast a golden light on the sand ripples and waves so I had great fun looking for abstracts which emphasised the glow and the lines. It wasn’t a wasted trip after all!

My recent trips to Fraisthorpe have now been featured in the July 2020 Royal Photographic Society’s Landscape Group Newsletter available on line as a pdf here
